Whether it’s a sunny day at the beach or a rainy afternoon, summer is a great time to enjoy a good book.
Each week LET22 will feature a different book, and this week’s selection is The House of the Scorpion , by Nancy Farmer.
The House of the Scorpion (2002) is a science fiction novel by Nancy Farmer about a young clone who is being raised to provide spare organs for the powerful drug lord known as “El Patrón”. The novel is set about 100 years into the future.
The story takes place in a strip of land between Mexico (now called Aztlán), and the United States. Opium, which is essentially an opium-producing estate, is ruled by Matteo Alacrán, also known as El Patrón. El Patrón’s work-force consists of illegal immigrants whom the Farm Patrol (ex-criminals who are tempted with the offer of protection from the police) enslave when they find them crossing the border in either direction. These illegal immigrants become “eejits.”
